Election Methods Study Focus of November Meetings
In November, with this year’s election excitement still fresh in our minds, League members will have two chances to learn and talk about the methods we use to conduct elections—and how they might be changed.
First, join us for a General Meeting on Wednesday, November 12, at 7:00 pm, at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center (505 G Avenue, Lake Oswego). Janice Thompson, co-chair of the League of Women Voters of Oregon study, Election Methods: Review of Alternatives and Oregon Proposals, will present ideas studied by the League. Ideas include partisan versus nonpartisan elections, instant runoff voting, fusion voting and the open/top two primary proposal that was on the November 4 ballot.
(You should have received a paper copy of the study in the mail in late September. If you did not, please contact Heather Drake at 503-245-1239 or htdrake@comcast.net.)
Second, attend one of the Unit Meetings (see calendar and participate in the study consensus. Member agreement is being gathered on: criteria for evaluating election systems, considerations for alternative election methods, and possible administrative improvements in the elections process.
Don’t miss these opportunities to make your voice heard on the important, democratic matter of voting. Read and digest the study report, attend this month’s meetings, and you will be ready to engage in some spirited, but also deliberative, democracy with fellow Leaguers!
