In Memoriam

Kathleen Newcomb

We are saddened to hear about the passing of our longtime League member Kathleen Newcomb.

We extend our condolences to her family and loved ones.

Kathleen’s obituary reads:

“Kathleen (pictured here with husband Bob

Newcomb) and her brother Michael were born and

raised in California. Their Irish father and Russian

mother immigrated to America, becoming U.S.

citizens. After receiving a degree in psychology at U.C.

Berkeley, Kathy married newspaper reporter Bob

Newcomb. The two had three children, Andrea, Nancy

and Thomas.

When Bob joined the news staff at the Eugene

Register Guard, the family moved to Oregon and later

lived in Ashland then Tualatin (where Bob directed

news service departments, first at Southern Oregon

College and later Marylhurst University). Over the

years Kathy was active working with the League of Women Voters on a wide range of civic issues.

She earned a second degree in business administration, passed the CPA exam and became a senior

auditor for the State of Oregon Division of Audits.

Kathy was a fearless champion of the environment and public health. After retirement she, with local

citizens, blocked Willamette River water from being added to Tualatin's pristine Bull Run water

source, by ensuring the matter be decided by Tualatin voters. She also served four years as host on

"The Water Spot," a monthly TVCTV program sponsored by Oregon Citizens for Safe Water,

covering water issues impacting the lives of all Oregonians.

Together Bob and Kathy enjoyed picnics with friends and family, taking grandsons Chase and Cole to

programs at OMSI and camping on the Oregon coast, attending concerts, the Oregon Star Party,

Sunday morning service at Ashland Trinity Church, singing, laughing and most of all enjoying each

other's company. Kathy has gone on to join Bob who died in November of 2019. Both are dearly

loved and will be truly missed.”

Kathleen joined the League of Women Voters in Eugene in 1962 after a friend invited her to join.

Below are just a few of her many leadership roles in the League:

• President of LWV West Clackamas County 1995-1996

• Helped lead statewide League fight against negative TV campaign advertising, called

“TV Truth Test” 1996

• Member of the LWVOR Study Committee for Funding Oregon: State and Local Tax

Systems and School Finance.

• Member of the four-part LWV Clackamas County “Drinking Water in West Clackamas

County” Study Committee

Marge Easley, our Action Co-Chair, shared the following story about Kathleen: “In 2022, when

Kathy was in poor health and no longer active in the League, her daughter Nancy gave me a box that

contained a treasure trove of documents that Kathy had saved over her 60 years with the League.

When I finished going through that box, I was in absolute awe of how much she had accomplished

and the wide range of her interests. I personally remember Kathy’s passionate and tireless advocacy

on the issue of safe drinking water, spurred on by her work during the 1990s on LWVCC’s “Drinking

Water in West Clackamas County” study. She was a true expert on the subject, and I turned to her

often to learn more about our region’s water systems.”

We are grateful for Kathleen’s rich legacy with the League of Women Voters.

Wilsonville Rd & Town Center Loop East (by the Wilsonville Library).

2025 Carrie Chapman Catt Award

Nancy Murray joined the League in 1974 during Nixon’s Watergate

hearings. New to Oregon with a two-year-old daughter, League was

the perfect place to make friends and learn about her new

hometown. She learned from experienced League leaders who

directly participated in city government as volunteers and observers.

and participated in local, state and national League studies.

In 1979, Nancy was elected President. Her most significant

contribution, with the help of a land use attorney, was to force a

developer’s compliance with the new, stricter environmental rules in

the City’s Code to protect existing wildlife habitat, sensitive natural areas and to provide open space

in the new Westlake development in Lake Oswego.

In 1986, Nancy served as Action Chair for the State League, organizing a large group of League

members from around the state to lobby their representatives. Nancy’s League leadership led to her

election to the Lake Oswego School Board, 1987 to 1991.

Over the years, Nancy juggled League participation with her job, organized and traveled on a

grant-funded teacher trip to South Africa in 1995, earned her M.A., and worked abroad in France. She

served as our League treasurer from 2014 to 2025 and during that same period served as an integral

member of our League's executive committees.

Thank you, Nancy, for your years of dedicated service.

Voter Girl Project!

Excitement is brewing as we build our new partnership with the Girl Scouts of Oregon/South

Washington. The LWVOR board has purchased Voter Girl for statewide use. Each county league can use the materials to build troop relationships with local Girl Scouts.

Voter Girl is a proprietary badge program with age appropriate civics activities and projects for Girl

Scouts in all K-12 levels. The plug in ready package has everything needed for implementation:

LWV/GS collaboration, civics ed lessons, troop projects, PR, logos, art, badge design, etc.

If you are interested in working with a local troop, please contact Meg Thompson to find out how to

get involved at votergirl@lwvor.org.
