Observer Reports: Clackamas County Commissioner Business

Meetings

By Ann Sullivan-Smoot, Observer

Due to a combination of being on vacation, along with the holidays which impacted the schedule of

meetings, I was able to attend a single meeting on 12/18/25. All 5 commissioners were in attendance

with Martha Schrader participating via zoom. Agenda available online, and there was ample time for

public comment at the beginning of the meeting. Meeting minutes from previous meetings were also

available on the website. Of particular importance was a discussion regarding the weather crisis, and

safety measures due to concerns regarding current flooding, as well as future winter weather issues.

Note that there is a NWS River Gauge page online, managed through the National Weather Service

for anyone interested.

As the year comes to an end, I would like to express my appreciation for the LWV. There have been

times when I question if my time observing the meetings has been helpful, yet I feel a personal

benefit. During this challenging political climate, witnessing what I can only describe as ‘issue based

politics’ is comforting. Without a deep dive into the history of the commissioners, I do not think one

could identify individual political leanings. Sure, there are glimmers of partisanship, predicated on

current definitions of Republican vs Democratic values, but as soon as I think I have political

preferences identified ... something happens to discount my conclusion. I find this a balm to the

escalatory spiral of anxiety fueled by partisanship. In light of this, I plan to continue to participate in

the observer role into 2026.

While I occasionally feel my impact on the organization is questionable,

it is my hope that in some way I support the freedoms which can be taken for granted. I send an end

of the year thank you to all the volunteers with LWV for your time and effort. I go on faith that

somehow my efforts will help the LWV in its mission. Happy New Year, may 2026 bring our country

and world clarity, compassion and kindness.
